Few things in Athens at the moment are more nostalgic, authentic and overall fun than Midnight Express. What started as an effort to revive midnight movie screenings three years ago, has become a cult annual festival-of-sorts based at Aavora cinema at Exarchia. Midnight Express is the brainchild of film critic Akis Kapranos who is responsible for the terrific curation, subtitling and overall management. So far, Athenians and visitors have had the chance to watch dozens of classic and undiscovered gems such as Ghostbusters, Night of the Living Dead, Labyrinth, Driller Killer and lots of John Carpenter.
This year marks the third season of the Express that debuts on October 5 with Carpenter's The Thing. Each Saturday onwards till December 21, the following screenings have been announced: All That Jazz, Akira, I Spit on Your Grave, The Blues Brothers, Deliverance, Body Double, Kwaidan, Roz, Conan The Barbarian, Apontes and The Goonies. Make sure to join the official Facebook group if you want to stay in touch—it's mostly in Greek but feel free to ask anything.
Update: Midnight Express continues well into the summer season, featuring screenings of classics such as Perfect Blue, Commando, Badlands, Blade Runner, The Breakfast Club and more.
